Jacksonville, the largest city in Florida, sits near the top of the state like a Welcome Wagon for travelers from Georgia. Oral historians place Native Americans, the Ossachite, in the area as long ago as 6,000 years. Europeans arrived around 1562 and the race was on. One may say Jacksonville has seen it all, including Yellow Fever in the late 1880s.
But, today, the city proper covers more land than any other city in the lower-48. There are six major sections of the city that contain many neighborhoods and villages subsumed when the city consolidated the whole area. Jacksonville has a Museum of Contemporary Art , as well as the Museum of Science and History (MOSH). The Karpeles Manuscript Library contains a collection of original manuscripts and documents with many antique books. A number of movies were shot in Jacksonville including The Creature from the Black Lagoon and G. I. Jane. College and pro-sports teams are in abundance here. You can see the Jaguars, the Suns, the Barracudas, and the women’s football team, the Dixie Blues.
Visit Jacksonville Landing and Jacksonville Riverwalks as well as Shipwreck Island. The Jacksonville zoo has a unique group of animals including the largest group of jaguars in captivity. The Jacksonville Arboretum and Gardens opened in 2008. For children, Adventure Landing is an indoor amusement park. Of course the beaches are beautiful and it is a great city to get around - come see us! There are different areas of Jacksonville - here are a few.
Arlington
This area east of downtown Jacksonville is convenient to downtown, beaches, 9A, and the airport. As the port traffic and jobs increase / cruises – this will become even more desirable for it’s location.
Westside - Home of Naval Air Station

The Westside of Jacksonville is a varied community. From the gracious homes on the St Johns River, to the middle to upper income Avondale area of residential architecture of the 1920's, to the many diverse bedroom communities such as Ortega, Cedar Hills, Lake Shore, and of course the communities of Argyle Forest.Argyle Forest consists of many subdivisions and the newest being the Oakleaf Plantation, a planned community. See more information under Oakleaf Plantation in Orange Park.
A large employer and presence in the Westside is the Naval Air Station Jacksonville (NAS). NAS is a multi-mission base hosting more than 100 tenant commands, is the third largest naval installation in the United States. Jacksonville has a large population of active duty military, dependents and retired military personnel in the greater Jacksonville area - many find their homes in the Westside area.
The now closed Cecil Field (one third of the land area if Duval County) is being developed for manufacturing and industrial end users. The infrastructure and transportation accessibility contribute to the appeal of this commercial and industrial site.

The Cummer Museum of Art & Gardens is a museum with a world-class collection and a nationally-recognized education center. The museum houses a collection of art from all ages and many cultures, organizes and presents special exhibitions, and has developed innovative programming and extensive community outreach. Two and one-half acres of formal gardens on the west bank of the St. Johns River provide further appeal for visitors.
Jacksonville Northside
Northside homes radiate out from downtown - older to younger homes. Closer to downtown the Springfield area is being renewed and in some cases the older antibellum homes are being replicated. Up by the Airport newer subdivisions abound - close to jobs and transportation via I295 loop - they have shopping and movie theaters. Growth areas include the homes near the the JAXPORT. The Jacksonville Port Authority (JAXPORT) is an international trade seaport in Northeast Florida. Companies doing business at Jacksonville's seaport employ more than 7,000 workers and support an additional 38,000 jobs in Jacksonville. JAXPORT also has a cruise port and a ferry terminal.

In the same area is the Jacksonville Zoo. In the midst of a long term growth plan, the Jacksonville Zoological Gardens is a must see for animal lovers. Covering acres of riverfront land in Jacksonville's Northside, some of the zoo's most recently added or renovated attractions include the Outback Steakhouse Australian Adventure, Great Apes of the World, Birds of the Rift Valley (aviary), Wild Florida (wetlands attraction) the 11-acre Plains of East Africa and a new giraffe overlook that literally puts you nose to nose with these gentle giants.

The zoo's premier attraction, however, Range of the Jaguar, is an excellent complex of its own. Designed as a recreated Latin American village and temple, the attraction includes a restaurant with large picture windows allowing you to watch these mighty cats while you eat. The lion, elephant and aardvark exhibits are also exceptional!
In addition to the animals, the zoo also features the largest thatched-roof structure in North America, Main Camp Safari Lodge, which serves as the park's entrance in addition to housing a gift shop, meeting space and party areas. When the Main Camp was built, the zoo brought in authentic Zulu craftsmen from Africa to weave the thatching by hand.
Other attractions include a narrated train tour, medical and educational facilities, boat docks (if you come by boat - entrance fee is free) and a variety of other large and small animal exhibits. Special holiday events like Spooktacular and Christmas lighting draw large crowds to the zoo after dark.

CSX is another large employer located in Northside. CSX Corporation, based in Jacksonville, Fla., owns companies providing rail, intermodal and rail-to-truck transload services that are among the nation's leading transportation companies, connecting more than 70 river, ocean and lake ports, as well as more than 200 short line railroads. Its principal operating company, CSX Transportation Inc., operates the largest railroad in the eastern United States with a 21,000-mile rail network linking commercial markets in 23 states, the District of Columbia, and two Canadian provinces. CSXT headquarters are in Jacksonville, Fla.

Anheuser-Busch a leading American brewer, with nearly half of U.S. beer sales, has a brewery in Northside and accomodates the public with tours. If you're like most people, you enjoy beer but have no idea how it's brewed. The Anheuser-Busch Company wants to remedy that. At the Anheuser-Busch brewery in Jacksonville, the public is invited to tour the brewery and learn firsthand how beer is made and bottled.
